Asylum & Refugee Managed Innovation Network

This booklet aims to help people get connected to ideas, services, resources and other people that could help promote the well-being of people seeking asylum or with refugee status. It has a particular focus on Nottinghamshire and health practitioners, but can also inform people working in the voluntary and community sector.

In 2001, a group convened to discuss concerns about meeting the mental health needs of asylum seekers and refugees in Nottingham. From this a needs assessment was initiated (Joanna Teuton, 2004) and, based on this assessment,  in 2004 funding was obtained from Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust to launch a local initiative to advance mental health provision for asylum seekers and refugees (asylum and refugee managed innovation network). One objective was to practically change local provision. Stemming from this came the idea to improve the flow of information and build connections between practitioners to enhance mental health provision for this part of the community.

Getting Connected was seen as central to all involved in supporting people seeking asylum. People who are forced to migrate because of human rights violations can experience disconnection from people, culture and systems familiar to them. When they arrive in this country, making connections in the new community can be a challenge. Whilst various agencies and people in Nottingham offer resources and support to asylum seekers, the connections between these can vary. In relation to healthcare professionals in particular, there is scope to enhance connections with key people, information and agencies relevant to asylum seekers in our area, so that we can help them get connected in their new life here.

The Ndu (life) Surgery, has provided these documents in word format so that health services may adapt them to suit their needs:-
