Asylum & Refugee Managed Innovation Network

The Asylum and Refugee Managed Innovation Network (MIN) was launched in 2004 in order to advance and promote the recommendations of a needs assessment – ‘Psychosocial Distress and Mental Health Problems Experienced by People Seeking Asylum or with Refugee Status in Nottingham’ This project gave impetus to a range of stakeholders to develop new initiatives within the following areas: research, dissemination, training and service provision.

The dispersal of asylum seekers and refugees throughout the UK has resulted in much regional research and service initiatives. In Nottinghamshire the range of research and service initiatives spans all sectors including: academic, housing, health, education, community, refugee and voluntary. However, the links between these agencies remains varied. One of the aims of the network is to strengthen inter-agency links and develop more coherent approaches to the resettlement and mental health needs of the population. Collaborating with refugees and asylum seekers is seen as an important part of this work. Furthermore, understanding and meeting the needs of this population could  benefit diverse established communities in Nottinghamshire.

Current Outcomes of the Network

A training package is under development which will draw on and add to existing training resources. It is envisaged that this will help to connect different local agencies and harness local resources to improve service provision. Additional outcomes of the network are: an information resource and systematic literature review, details of which will be made available on this website.

There is also scope to for a collaborative research venture to inform and develop mental health service provision.
